What is the Indy X Files?
  • The Indy X-Files - A one hour look at local music.

I really think “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)” written on the web in 2008 is terribly lame.  However, here you will find most of the stuff I can think of off the top of my head about questions you might have about the “Indy X-Files”.  If you feel I missed something you can email me by clicking here.

    When is it?

Sunday Nights at 7pm.  Starting sometime in September.  Please do not hold me to this date.  It really depends if enough good music submissions come to the X.  That really decides the start date.  September is a realistic time though.

We will be having rotating hosts for the show.  Why?

We have very, very active DJ’s at X103.  Some are in bands, some create music and put it up on myspace pages under odd names, some are friends with bands and various combinations of what you just read.  By having rotating hosts you can rest assured that you don’t have to always be pals every time you see that person.  Plus we can have guest hosts for the show as well.  No one jock has 100% say over the show, so buying them a beer at a show, playing a show with jock, sending naked pictures to jock or whatever you can think of will not get you any “in” for airplay.  Subsequently, if a representative of X103 guarantees that you will be played, scream liar out loud and punch them in the arm.  You don’t have to punch them but please scream liar as loud as possible.  If something like this does happen, please email me here and tell me what happened.

Another reason is that many, many radio stations around the country seem to have what I like to call, “THAT GIRL or GUY”.  She/he hosts the show and goes to shows and from what I can tell develops a click of people who are in bands.  The stalker side came out of me and I go to “THAT GIRL of GUY’S” myspace or facebook page and lo and behold she/he declares herself/himself the “LOCAL QUEEN/KING”.  It gets better, I stream “THAT GIRL or GUY’S” show and she/he talks and talks and talks and then plays a band who she just hung out with at some bar on Friday night.  She/he proceeds to tell a very unfunny story about something that was probably really funny after six or seven beers.  The next thing you know 6 MINUTES out of a 60-minute show has disappeared.  In my opinion, that’s an abuse of one hour of airtime.  Especially if the goal is to play local music.  Not to mention that when you go to “THAT GIRL or GUY’S” myspace page, her/his pictures tells an ugly story. Clearly, she/he being all smiles and mugging for the camera and is having a great time.  Sadly, the horrified look in the poor band member’s eyes really tells us the true tale.  Here at X103, we have no Local Kings or Local Queens.  We will try to put as much music as possible into 60 minutes and keep the talking to a minimum.  We can get verbose on the Internet.  That’s the main reason why the Internet was created.  You are reading a verbose statement right now.  The good news is that this will never be read on during the show.  We would have no time for music then.  That would be bad. :(

The upside here is that the music will solely be judged by if it’s a well-recorded, good song.  If that’s the case, chances are at some point, it will get played on the show.  If you didn’t like us before you can continue to hate us just as you did before.  I feel that this is pretty fair.

You just said well recorded.  What does that mean?

A great example of a band locally that made a good sounding record and they recorded it in a basement of all places is the band This Story.  The record is called “Darling, it’s war”.  I think it was released in 2006.  The liner notes say, “This album was recorded in a dark basement with red velvet hanging from some of the ceiling…”  I do not know this band but I did buy the album in a record store.  Mainly because I liked the cover.  The music is pretty good, you should check them out.  My point here is that I do not think This Story spent a few hundred thousand dollars on the making of this album but it sounds really good.  Nothing is distorted sounding or sounding like it was recorded deep in a well.

Your bands recording will not be compared to a band that spends one year in the studio and had every toy and trinket at their disposal to make a pristine quality sounding recording.  All that is being said here is that in the age of technology being so readily available, with all of these stories of music being recorded on a Apple computers, if we can hear separation of instruments and vocals that are not distorted, that’s workable.  A hook wouldn’t hurt either… but hey you are the artist... that’s your call.

This is the hardest part because all bands aren’t created equal.  Sonically something might sound good but could be a weaker song than a song is really good but it is recorded to have that "trapped in a tin can sound."  Most radio stations have signal chains that boost certain frequencies and those signal chains can make already poorly recorded songs sound terrible.  We have some standards of quality that needs to be reached and engineers whose sole job is sound quality.  No one wants to ever see an angry engineer.

How does music get picked for the show?

As program director, I put together the playlist for X103.  That’s my responsibility.  This will be my responsibility as well.  However, there will be go to people who work at the radio station and those who do not that I will go to solicit opinions, suggestions and advice.

You say “Indy X-Files” but what are you considering a local artist or band?

From Lafayette to Bloomington and Terre Haute to Muncie.  How’s that for north, south, east and west?  By looking at the map I see that we have screwed all the bands in Peru, Indiana.  You are just a little north of Lafayette.  Sorry guys…

Also, because a band is signed to an indie, major or Internet music label will not disqualify them from airplay on the local show.  That means if John Mellencamp has a new record out we might play a song or two.  Haste The Day is on a indie label and you’ll hear music from them as well… probably a little bit more than John’s.  No offense to Mr. Mellencamp.

Will the Indy X-Files have a specific musical format?

X103 is a rock station.  That’s what we are and its pretty obvious that if a rock band comes along and they have some good songs that might get played over other genres of music.  That does not mean that’s all that will get played on the show.  We all have personal tastes and certainly sometimes we “go for what we know”.  For example, Deuce loves what I like to call “Island jams”.  He likes music that reminds him of the sun, beach and ocean.  The main accusation is that he likes Jimmy Buffett.  I take him out back and beat him about his legs and head with a stick and we meet at the happy medium and just say 311 and call it a day.  In all seriousness, if you create a genre of music that’s outside the rock realm please do not think that you are disqualified from the show.  Although, girls who want to be the next Mariah Carey or dudes who would like to be the next Eminem or DMX really have a bit of a uphill climb.  Not saying, just saying…

How do I submit a song?

We have a bunch of ways you can get your music to us.

Email your music to the Indy X-Files gmail account by clicking here.  Please have the MP3 at 192kbps or higher.  No wav files please.

Email your myspace link by clicking here.  This way we can listen to your songs.  Hopefully the download option is open and we can snag the song from your page.  If not we can message the band.

Mail your bands music in the shiny compact disc format to this address:  WRZX , 6161 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, IN 46220 or you can drop it by our studios at the above address to the nice lady at the front desk.

We will not accept music in the cassette format due to the fact that the sound quality is not that good.

If you have any question please email me by clicking here.

    Thank you for the time,
    Lenny Diana
    Program Director
